Girlz magazine’s guide to becoming a writer.
|
Writing is one of those very few careers that offer you so much of flexibility; you can do it anywhere, at any time about whatever you want. There are so many paths to choose from, you could write short stories, newspaper articles, novels, screenplays, reviews and that’s is just the tip of the iceberg. You don’t even have to have a degree… although education makes everything easier.
We have gotten insider advice from two very successful professional writers, but first our list to help you on your journey to becoming a published writer. |
Write. |
| Simple really, just write as often as you can, about anything and everything. |
Live. |
Life experience is your most important tool. Do things that inspire you. Listen to music, read books, visit art galleries etc. |
Take a writing class |
Get other people’s opinions on your work and how you could improve it, not because we think your writing sucks, but because you are young and people with experience can help you. Getting advice from a professional will really give you an insight into the world of publishing. |
Protect your work |
Do research into a company before sending them your novel that you poured your soul into, especially if you have to pay for the printing. |
Don’t give up! |
Keep going, if it’s something you love it doesn’t matter if other people don’t like your work, someday someone will understand you. |
Have a “job for money” |
Everybody needs to eat, and you need money to do that, get a degree, get a job, it can be anything, something that you enjoy preferably. It will provide you with material to write about as well and take the pressure off you needing to make money by writing. If you write because it’s an art form that you love your work is more likely to speak to people, rather than treating it as a meal ticket. |
Start Blogging |
| It’s a great way to practice your craft and get feedback from readers. |
Find a support system |
Positive reinforcement is necessary; being around people who are going through the same things as you are can be inspiring and enriching. Join a writer’s forum or club. |
| Have fun with it. |
The most important thing is you have to enjoy it. Follow your whims when it comes to plots or storylines. Don’t be scared to experiment. If people don’t like it, at least you tried it, and that is way better than “what if” |
